Frequently Asked Questions

How do pickup and return work?
Pick up at major airports or choose hotel/home delivery (arrives before check-in/departure). A prepaid, self-addressed return envelope is included in your package. Simply pack all items, seal the envelope, and drop it into any postbox in Japan. No paperwork or counter lines are required, and there is no return fee.
Can I return my portable pocket WiFi to a different airport or location from where I picked it up?
Yes, you can return your portable pocket WiFi from anywhere in Japan. For example, you can pick it up at Narita Airport and drop it in a mailbox at Kansai Airport or near your hotel. Just make sure to drop it off before passing through airport security.
By when do I have to return my portable pocket WiFi?
You must drop the portable pocket WiFi into a postbox by 11:59 PM on the final day of your rental period.
Can one router cover my family and all our devices?
Yes—you can connect up to 10 devices simultaneously, including phones, tablets, and laptops. As long as your device is WiFi-capable, it will work seamlessly with our portable pocket WiFi.
How early should I order, or can I order if I am already in Japan?
We recommend ordering at least one week in advance, though we accept reservations up to 3 days prior. If you are already in Japan, you can still order online for delivery to your accommodation. *Please note: We cannot deliver to Airbnb addresses; please contact us to arrange an alternative pickup point.*
Can I extend the portable pocket WiFi rental period?
Yes, you can extend your rental period via My Page. You will automatically receive a return notification email 2–3 days before your current rental end date. To extend, simply fill out the extension form attached to that email.
My schedule has changed and I won't arrive on the same date. What should I do?
Please contact us immediately with your new arrival date so we can update our shipping schedule. If we receive your request before the package is shipped, there will be no extra charge. If the package has already been shipped, we can arrange to transfer or resend it to you.

Customer Review

Why Do You Need a Portable Pocket WiFi in Japan?

So many conveniences have appeared that make travelling in Japan easier than ever. HOWEVER, if there is one thing that tourists still struggle with, it's a lack of free public WiFi.
Because cyber security is something that is very important in Japan, there are hurdles for tourists to get connected without some sort of verification. Accessing free WiFi often means needing a Japanese phone number or access to e-mail to register for free Internet service. (But how you gonna get to your e-mail when you don't have Internet to start?!)Whether this for better or worse (some people do appreciate the security, not having personal information stolen is a plus) this is the state of things currently, so it's wise to get a portable WiFi device, known as pocket WiFi, in preparation for your journey!

Foreign smartphones may not be compatible with Japanese cellular networks.
Smartphones that do not support Japanese frequencies cannot use the Internet even if you purchase a prepaid SIM or eSIM. Many people ask about the problem of not being able to set up the smartphone, but in most cases, even if the smartphone can be set up, communication is not possible because it does not support Japanese frequency.

Pocket wifi is very convenient because it allows you to connect to the Internet anywhere in Japan as long as your smartphone is connected to Wi-Fi.

Pocket WiFi for Tourists and Short-Term Visitors

Most travelers coming to Japan face the same question: Pocket WiFi or a disposable SIM card? International roaming is usually expensive, and SIM cards can run into network band compatibility issues once you're here — so for a lot of visitors, that rules both options out fast.

Free WiFi at cafes, JR stations, and Tokyo Metro stations exists, but the connection can be unreliable and isn't always secure, so it's not something you want to depend on for your whole trip.

Why Choose Pocket WiFi

No compatibility issues

SIM cards mean checking card size and network bands. Pocket WiFi works with any WiFi-enabled device — phone, laptop, or tablet.

Connect multiple devices at once

Depending on the model, one router connects 5–10 devices, so groups and families can share a single device instead of buying separate eSIMs.

Plans built for real data use

Prepaid SIMs often cap data by the day or week, and truly unlimited plans are hard to find in Japan. CDJapan Rental offers unlimited plans at 30%+ lower prices than other providers with comparable network quality.

Flexible rental length

Short-term SIMs and eSIMs often have a usage window. Pocket WiFi doesn't, so you can rent to match your actual itinerary.

Partial refund for poor signal

Let us know within 2 days of your rental start date if connection quality isn't up to standard, and we'll issue a partial refund.

Pick up and return anywhere

Pick up at Narita, Haneda, Kansai Airport, your hotel, or another address in Japan. Return from anywhere — just drop the prepaid envelope in any postbox.

How to Use a Portable Pocket Wifi

Pocket wi-fi is a palm-size portable device that functions as a personal WiFi hotspot. All wi-fi enabled devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops are compatible.

Orders with CDJapan Rental include a charging cable and AC adapter. Estimated battery life of each device is 5 to 10 hours depending on model and usage.

Getting online is easy!

  1. Turn on the device.
  2. Under your smartphone "wi-fi" settings, select the corresponding network name (SSID).
  3. Enter the password.
  4. And you're ready to browse!

*The SSID and password will be enclosed in the package.

Extend Your Rental

Extend your rental period easily from your My Page, anytime before the return date.
Extension packages are available for purchase once the package is sent out.
